UX terms to know

  • Confirmation bias (24 across) — Bias is unavoidable in UX research. Researchers are humans, after all, and none of us are free from unconscious biases. The first step to minimizing bias in your research is learning to identify it. This helpful article about bias in UX research covers common types, including confirmation bias.
  • Hawthorne Effect (6 down) — This principle states that people are likely to change their behavior if they know they are being observed. This presents an obvious challenge for observational researchers, as discussed in our Field Guide chapter on Ethnography in UX Research.
  • KPI (3 across) — Key Performance Indicators are quantifiable targets used to measure performance of a specific objective over time. Some UX researchers and ReOps pros use KPIs to track the impact of their research. Devin Harold, Director of Research at Capital One, explains how to use KPIs this way.
  • Net Promoter Score (2 across) — NPS surveys typically ask a single question: "How likely are you to recommend this product/service/experience to a friend or colleague?" accompanied by a 0-10 scale. Often they also include an option for users to explain why they answered the way they did. They're a very common way of collecting automated user feedback, so you've probably seen dozens, if not hundreds, of examples before.

Researchers mentioned

  • Margaret Mead (13 down) — Mead (1901-1978) was an American cultural anthropologist whose work on the attitudes toward sex in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific made her a controversial figure in her lifetime and to this day. Her work—including her most famous book Coming of Age in Samoa (5 down)—was influence by and, in turn, greatly influenced the early 20th century American feminist movement.

Euphoria is a 2014 novel by Lily King which offers a fictionalized account of Mead's field work in New Guinea and the relationship between Mead and fellow anthropologists Gregory Bateson and Reo Fortune.

Tools & resources mentioned
