Use grid (matrix) questions in your screener to combine multiple subtopics into a single question

Create screener surveys faster with a question structure that easier for participants to complete

What are grid questions?

Grid questions, also called matrix questions, are a screener survey question type that allows you to combine multiple questions into a single grid view. They are useful in cases where you are asking participants many related questions with the same answer scale, such as asking about a series of similar products you want them to rate, or questions around customer experience or satisfaction.

Consolidating multiple subtopics into a single grid question allows for a more concise screener survey—faster for researchers to build, and easier for participants to answer. The grid format reduces the cognitive load for the survey taker, often improving clarity around the questions being asked and helping them move more quickly through your screener.

How can I create a grid question?

🧇 How to create a grid question for your screener survey
1. In the screener builder, select “Pick Any - Grid” or “ Pick One - Grid” from the question type dropdown.
2. Enter your screener question, and input your answer scale via the row and column values.
3. Edit your qualification logic by clicking on the cells within the grid.
4. When you’re ready, you can preview your questions by clicking “Preview screener” at the bottom of the page.

Within the screener survey builder, you’ll see an option to pick “Grid question” from the question type dropdown. You can choose between “Pick Any - Grid” or “Pick One - Grid”.

Pick One - Grid question

When you select the Pick One - Grid question, you’ll see a grid with default green-colored “Accept” cells. Here you can enter your screener question, and input your answer scale via the row and column values. You can add more rows or columns by clicking the “+ Add row” or “+ Add column” buttons.

To edit your qualification logic, click on the cells within the grid. When you click on a cell, “Accept” will change to “Reject”, and vice versa. In the case below, we want to talk to people who generally enjoy fast food, so we’ll edit our logic to reject those who choose “Dislike” for our listed food items.

Pick Any - Grid question

When you select the Pick Any - Grid question, you’ll see a grid with default gray-colored “May Select'' cells. Similar to above, you can enter your screener question, and input your answer scale via the row and column values. Add more rows or columns by clicking the “+ Add row” or “+ Add column” buttons.

To edit your qualification logic, click on the cells within the grid. For Pick Any questions, you can choose between “May Select”, “Must Select”, or “Reject”.

In the case below for example, we want to talk only to Netflix subscribers who are open to other streaming services. So we can set “Must Select” for “Currently subscribed to Netflix”, and “Reject” for those who would never consider subscribing to Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max (other streaming services we’re interested in learning more about).

You can also use grid questions to set survey skip logic. Click “Edit skip logic” at the bottom of the page. From the dropdowns, you’ll be able to choose from all of the rows you’ve created to set the skip logic for each question.

When you’re ready, you can preview your questions by clicking “Preview screener” at the bottom of the page.
